Cycling near a heavy vehicle

Standard BNQ 1030-100
Heavy Vehicle Risk Index – Vision and Detection of Vulnerable Road Users

The coexistence of heavy vehicles and vulnerable road users, particularly pedestrians and cyclists, is a major road safety issue in urban environments. To help prevent collisions, the standard BNQ 1030-100 proposes a methodology allowing for the assessment of risk associated to a heavy vehicle operating in an environment shared with vulnerable road users and enabling their risk classification.

Inspired in particular by the Direct Vision Standard introduced in London as part of a road safety program, this approach is based on an objective assessment of direct vision, indirect vision, and other auxiliary safety equipment.

This classification makes it possible to compare different heavy vehicle models and supports design, selection, and procurement decisions, particularly for urban applications.

This standard is intended for heavy vehicles manufacturers, fleet managers, operators, trucking schools, regulatory authorities, and other stakeholders concerned with the safety of vulnerable road users.
