Standard CAN/BNQ 2501-062
Soils - Determination of Minimum and Maximum Densities and Density Index of Cohesionless Soils - Vibrating Table Test

This national standard specifies the laboratory test methods used to determine the minimum and maximum densities of cohesionless soils by pouring the loose material and by densification of the material using vibration, respectively. The densities are used to calculate the relative density index. The standard applies to free-draining cohesionless soils containing up to 10% in weight of particles able to pass through a 80-µm sieve. It sets out requirements regarding seven main elements:

  • apparatus (vibrating table, moulds, guide sleeve, overflow tray, overload, comparator support);
  • calibration (determining the volume by direct measurement and by filling with water and taking the initial reading of the comparator);
  • sampling;
  • minimum densification method (particles smaller than 10 mm and particles larger than 10 mm);
  • maximum densification (dry and wet methods);
  • calculating and expressing the results (minimum and maximum dry densities, relative density index and suggested form);
  • test report.
